The September Fed decision: a forex learner’s reading guide
On September 16, 2026, the Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75–4%. Its statement cited elevated inflation. For someone learning currencies, the useful starting point is the official decision, not a social-media prediction of the dollar’s next move.

Separate the decision from the surprise
A currency price can reflect expectations before an announcement arrives. A rate increase therefore does not establish a reliable trading direction. Write down what was announced, when it was released and what comparison you are making before looking at a chart.
Make a two-column research note
In one column record the statement’s actual language and figures. In the other record your questions: what did market participants expect, what changed from the previous release, and what other news arrived at the same time? Keep answers supported by evidence separate from assumptions.
Observe before practising
Use a simulated account to observe the spread and price around a scheduled release. Record timestamps in one time zone. A chart alone will not show whether an order could have filled at the displayed price. The learning objective is understanding uncertainty, not turning one policy announcement into a buy or sell instruction.
